Powassan Bikers Fest Ride raises $5,000 for Cancer Care Close to Home Campaign

Motorcycle enthusiasts from across the province participated in the inaugural ride that started at the North Bay Regional Health Centre and ended at the Trout Creek Community Centre.

Just over $5,000 was raised by the 100 bikers who completed the 250 kilometre motorcycle ride around Lake Nipissing as part of the Powassan Bikers Fest.

The money supports the North Bay Regional Health Centre (NBRHC) Foundation’s Cancer Care Close to Home campaign.

Motorcycle enthusiasts from across the province participated in the inaugural ride that started at the North Bay Regional Health Centre and ended at the Trout Creek Community Centre.

"Proceeds are supporting the purchase of urgently needed advanced medical equipment for the diagnosis, treatment and follow-up care for patients with cancer," says a news release from the group. "Each year, our hospital provides thousands of patients with support throughout their journey with cancer, from diagnosis through diagnostic imaging and the lab, to surgical intervention, chemotherapy, rehabilitation, telemedicine, and palliative care."

Linda VanderSchaaf is a grateful patient who shared her story at the ride and appreciates the efforts put forth by fundraising events in the region.

“I was diagnosed with cancer in 2012. The year that followed involved an endless array of medical tests and treatments, including blood work, CT scans, mammograms, bone scans, a stem cell transplant, and chemotherapy. Our hospital played and still plays an important role in my care.  When I come here for tests or treatment, I always feel my care is a priority,” said VanderSchaaf.

“Screening and early detection has a significant impact on outcomes related to cancer. We know that early intervention saves lives and we are grateful for the support of the organizers, participants and sponsors of Ride Around the Lake for Cancer’s Sake,” said Tammy Morison, President and CEO, NBRHC Foundation. “Our hospital’s compassionate and dedicated staff need advanced medical equipment to optimize the care they provide patients during this frightening time.

“It’s inspiring to experience the amazing support of many riders and our community who generously participated in the first annual Ride Around the Lake for Cancer’s Sake,” said Peter McIsaac, Director of Powassan Bikers Fest. “We are looking forward to planning next year’s ride and raising even greater support for cancer care for our community. Keep an eye out for more information on the Powassan Bikers Fest Facebook page.”
