North Bay Police Chief Shawn Devine is calling last Wednesday’s homicide a “drug-related home invasion,” in relation to the shooting death of 45-year-old Abraham Kamerman that evening.

The local police service held a short media conference on Monday morning to go over the details of the investigation at North Bay Police headquarters.

“On December 5th, the victim was with a female acquaintance at her residence located on Beattie Street in the City of North Bay,” stated Detective Sgt. Jeff Warner.

“It is alleged that at approximately 8:55 p.m. the two accused parties, 26-year-old Ryan Abraham and 25-year-old Taylor Briscoe, attended the residence to engage in a home invasion-style Robbery.  It is alleged that Ryan Abraham was carrying the firearm. Ryan Abraham then got into an altercation with the victim outside of the apartment door and proceeded to discharge several rounds from the gun striking the victim and fatally wounding him.  Abraham and Briscoe then ran outside to their vehicle and fled the area.

“Members of the North Bay Police Service immediately attended the scene and assisted the ambulance personnel tend to the victim.  The victim was transported by ambulance to the North Bay Regional Health Centre where he was pronounced dead.”

The two suspects, both from North Bay, were arrested over the weekend and are charged with second-degree murder.

Briscoe was arrested in North Bay on December 7th, while London Police apprehended Abraham on the 8th.  Abraham was held in custody facing several serious charges in that area and will appear via a video link to North Bay on the murder charge today.

While two suspects have been arrested and charged, Devine says it is still considered an ongoing major investigation.

“Our investigators are talking to people in London. We are looking at any evidence that may have been obtained down there so, in an investigation like this, it may be a number of weeks before a complete package is put forward and made available for disclosure to the defence,” said Devine.

They are also trying to create a timeline as to when and how Abraham was able to leave North Bay and travel to London where he was eventually apprehended.

Devine also noted that they believe they have recovered the weapon used in Wednesday’s shooting.

“I understand the weapon has been recovered, however we do not have any forensic indicating that weapon was the weapon, but we believe yes, it has been recovered,” said Devine.

Devine could not give the specific timeline but he believes North Bay has not seen a gun-related homicide in over 20 years.

“I do find it disturbing that we have gotten to a situation in our community where we have violence that escalates to the level of using a firearm,” said Devine.
