OPP POSTS AN IMPRESSIVE SERIOUS CRIME CLEARANCE RATE

(North Bay ON) - The ending of a year brings with it an incredible amount of statistical analysis as police services review their performance. OPP detachments across the North East region, on a daily basis, input an incredible amount of data into Records Management System (RMS) and that information makes its way into the Uniform Crime Reporting System (UCRS). The recent Stats Canada Uniform Crime Reporting survey results from that massive data collection process and measures the nature and incidence of crime and traffic enforcement in Canada.

Review of the North East Region UCR stats indicate an outstanding Serious Crime Clearance Rate of 95.6%. The serious crime covers 26 categories of crime such as murder – aggravated assault – sexual assault - assault - assault police officer – kidnapping /confinement – robbery – utter threats. North East Region OPP investigated 3,153 such serious violations in 2003.

The UCR System also captures criminal traffic offences and the North East Region demonstrated an impressive clearance rate of 95% in this category. The traffic violation category includes offences such as Dangerous Operation, Impaired Operation, Fail to Provide Breath Sample, Fail to Stop or Remain and Drive While Prohibited (to name a few).

North East Region motor vehicle fatalities have declined over the last three years by 58%. In 2001, there were 57 fatal collisions in which 83 people died. The number of fatal collisions dropped to 50 in 2002 with 67 people losing their lives. In 2003, 48 people were killed in 43 crashes.

Superintendent Ken Miller, Director of Operations - North East Region, credits the daily efforts of front-line officers, the leadership of Unit Commanders / Detachment Commanders and the positive impact of community partnerships for these successful policing results.
