Since the terrible tragedy in Ottawa on September 18th, 2013 involving an OC Transpo bus and a Via Rail train, North Bay Transit has completed an internal review of its railway crossing procedure.

While occurrences similar to the September 18th event involving a transit bus and train have never happened in North Bay, the transit department strives to ensure it is doing everything reasonably possible to maintain the safety of its passengers, general public and staff.

Upon completion of the review, a new railway crossing policy and procedure has been created and implemented effective Monday, October 28, 2013, whereas, all transit buses upon approaching a railway crossing, guarded or unguarded, will come to a complete stop before crossing.

Reflective signs with red lettering bearing the indication THIS VEHICLE STOPS AT ALL RAILWAY CROSSINGS have been affixed to rear of its entire fleet and motorists following North Bay Transit buses are asked to be aware and respect the implementation of this new policy.
