Art on Main, downtown artists’ collective (AOM) features the “Fire and Wood” showcase by Wood Turners Denis Gauthier and Doug Woltz in its main display window, at 143 Main St. W. in downtown North Bay, beginning October 3rd.

The display shows the relationship between the natural elements, fire and wood and their capacity to co-exist with one another. The sculpturing of a burl, stump, or the roots of a tree enhances the mesmerizing silhouette of a flame and all its power. Wood and fire have always been competing forces; these two artists combine both elements and create one identity highlighting the simple, elegant and beauty of nature.

Gauthier works only with hand-picked wood. He specializes in maple, birch, oak, ash and cherry to create wooden bowls, sculptures and other works of art. For more than 20 years, he challenged himself while continuously searching for the special look and feel each creation transpires.

After many years working with wood, Woltz began turning wood about 10 years ago. His distinctive work is turned using a variety of exotic woods such as zebra, rosewood, imbuya, chechen, ziricote, and local woods, including white birch, ash and maple. The simplicity of the clean lines and rounded edges of his functional and decorative pieces brings out the natural beauty of the woods’ grain and texture.

Art on Main is a collective of emerging and established local artists dedicated to creating and sharing exceptional work in a variety of media. The commercial gallery is open Tuesday – Saturday, 10 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.
