This message gives an update on watershed conditions as well notification that a Flood Advisory has been issued. A Flood Advisory is issued when there is a potential for flooding to occur in low-lying areas. Nuisance or minor flooding of access roads, backyards, basements, etc. is anticipated.

The thunderstorm cells that passed through the area earlier this afternoon have resulted in localized flooding and are expected to continue for the remainder of the afternoon and into this evening.

The amount of rain received has also caused an increase in flows in Chippewa Creek (North Bay) which has reached the top of its bank.

Total accumulations forecasted for today range between 5 and 20 millimetres, with heavier amounts expected with the intensity of the thunderstorm activity.

Localized flooding can be expected to occur in low-lying areas and floodplains. Given the intensity of rainfall and fast-flowing water in ditches, local municipalities are advised to check for debris jams at culverts, catch basins, and storm outfalls.

The public is urged to use extreme caution around all watercourses due to strong currents and slippery stream banks. Parents and caregivers are advised to keep children away from all waterways. Areas around dams, culverts and bridges should be avoided at all times.

The North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority will continue to monitor watershed conditions and provide updates to this message as warranted.
