On April 29, 8 girl members (and their leaders) of the Powassan Pathfinder & TREX unit (Girl Guides of Canada, Ontario Council) travelled to our Nation’s Capital to attend Free the Children’s National WE DAY event.

Fuelled by the desire for change, and to make the world a better place, the girls were among 4,000 youth from all across Canada who gathered together at the Robert Guerin Centre in Gatineau to hear Free the Children co-founder Craig Kielburger.

It was more than just a day of celebration and inspiration; it was an opportunity for the girls to be with others who share their passion for creating a better tomorrow.

The girls also heard inspirational speeches & stories from actor and activist Martin Sheen, Assembly of First Nations National Chief Shawn Atleo, Frank O’Dea (founder of Second Cup), award winning filmmaker Rob Stewart (Sharkwater) and Free the World ambassador Spencer West.

Their group also enjoyed musical performances by Tyler Shaw, Neverest, Shawn Desman and Canadian rapper Kardinal Offishall.

WE Day is not just a one-day event; it is the culmination of a year of good works spurred on by the commitment to service – both within your community and internationally.

You can’t buy a ticket to WE Day; you must earn tickets through dedication and hard work. Service projects undertaken by the Powassan Pathfinder & TREX group have included: Earth Day clean up, donating handmade scarves and small gifts for children at the Transition House Shelter, Yellow Fish Road projects to protect our local watershed, planting flowers at the Grace House, making donations to a local animal shelter and organizing food drives. They have also engaged in international service projects, such as helping to fundraise for a school in China and raising money to support a Guiding Unit in a Third World Country.
