The Lions Christmas Telethon is going to look very different and be in a much shorter format.

Gary Verge, chair of Lions Children's Christmas Telethon, says the December 5 event will be broadcasted on YourTV and online from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. that day.

"It will be made up of a tape of the 'Best Of' previous telethons which will be aired on YourTV and broadcasted online," said Verge about the Canadore College production.

"Based on the COVID-19 situation we thought it would be best to go with the shortened format, otherwise we would have eight-year-olds to 90-year-olds all in one area along with the production crew. the camera people and everything."

Verge says he and his wife will operate the phones to take in donations and a ticker at the bottom of the screen will mention the donors.

"Any companies that want to donate can contact the Lions Club," he said.

"We will make sure they get mentioned on the ticker prior to the broadcast."

Despite a shortened broadcast, Verge insists they needed to do this event to help the many families in need.

"We normally service about 400 plus families, but this year we are expecting 600 plus," said Verge.

"We went forward with this format because we really need the money to carry through with our mandate to supply gifts, turkeys and ham to needy families."
