Chief Fire Prevention Officer Randy Vezina confirmed that a Toronto landlord was convicted of fire code charges laid in September 2006 for an apartment building he owns in the city.

“On Friday the 18th Kwok Hing Lau of Toronto, was convicted of fire code charges involving an apartment building on Colgan Avenue,” explains Vezina.

“He was convicted for failing to install a fire alarm system, failing to install emergency lighting and failing to have qualified person come in, validate the fire extinguishers annually. The fines totalled $9,970.”

Vezina says the North Bay Fire Prevention is laying a charge in all situations such as the Colgan Avenue apartment.

“Obviously the courts have spoken again and we'll continue to lay charges," he states.

“Where significant life safety item is not installed in the building, where it interferes with life safety we are going to lay the charge.”
