The Nipissing Lakers men's basketball team will have a new head coach for the upcoming season, as head coach Chris Cheng has accepted a new position with the Windsor Lancers.

"I would like to thank Chris for his leadership, energy and dedication during his tenure as head coach, and I wish him all the best moving forward in his new position," said Nipissing University's Director of Athletics, Vito Castiglione.

"I would also like to acknowledge and thank the rest of his coaching staff who served throughout his tenure as head coach for all of their hard work."

Cheng, the inaugural and only coach in the program's history, was announced in August of 2013, leading the Lakers in their first season of 2014-15.

Cheng led the Lakers to one playoff appearance and had a 1-1 record in the post-season, advancing to the quarter-finals in 2017.

He was also part of Canada Basketball's program with U18 and U 16 teams, as well as coaching the All-Canadian BioSteel game

Cheng is appreciative of having the opportunity to start the Lakers men's basketball program.

"Without the unwavering support of [President and Vice-Chancellor] Dr. Mike DeGagné, [Assistant Vice-President Students] Dr. Casey Phillips, and [Director of Athletics] Vito Castiglione, it would not have been possible to build the program to where it is today," added Cheng in a Lakers release.

"I am grateful to them and their staff for providing me the opportunity to represent the university as their inaugural head coach over these past six years. Thank you to all of the student-athletes, alumni, coaches, support staff, Sixth Club members, and community supporters who have devoted their time to me and the program.

"I am forever grateful for each and every one of you, and will cherish the memories and relationships we built."
