All hands on deck as fire destroys Stradwicks Carpet One

Right now, we're just starting the investigation the Ontario Fire Marshall has been notified

Fire Chief Jason Whiteley says all three stations plus an extra crew were called in to fight a fire that destroyed Sradwicks Carpet One on Brule St. Tuesday night.

"When we arrived, it was fully involved," Whiteley told BayToday early Wednesday morning.

"Right now, we're just starting the investigation the Ontario Fire Marshall has been notified. We haven't determined a dollar loss yet, and it's too early to give you any indications about the investigation other than we're following up on a few different things that were observed during the fire."

The Chief said he couldn't disclose what those observations were at this time.

"No, not yet. Sorry."

Whiteley says he expects to release a statement later today.

The call came in at 9:50 Tuesday night and flames could be seen from across the city.

There were no injuries related to the blaze. Franklin Street was closed in both directions.

Stradwicks has been in business locally for many years and the building has been undergoing roof repairs this week. The store sells hardwood and vinyl flooring as well as carpeting.

It's a local family-owned and operated neighbourhood flooring store originally opened in 1944 by J.C. Stradwick. Ralph James purchased the branch in 1980 and worked hard to expand the business.

Firefighters were still dousing hotspots at 8:30 this morning.
