It's the first official full day of summer.

Summer Solstice, otherwise known as the June Solstice, officially took place this year at 5:44 p.m. yesterday, when the North Pole is at its maximum tilt (roughly 23.5 degrees) toward the sun.

It lasts until Tuesday, September 22 when autumn begins.

Remember later this afternoon the North Bay Symphony has a great idea to kick off summertime.

"We're encouraging instrumentalists and singers of all kinds to perform in their neighbourhoods this Sunday at 6 p.m. ," says Leanne Miners, NBSO Marketing Coordinator. "While we can’t share the music in the concert hall we can share it in our neighbourhoods!"

Meanwhile, Environment Canada has continued its heat warning for our area,

  • North Bay - Powassan - Mattawa
  • West Nipissing - French River
  • Greater Sudbury and vicinity
  • Kirkland Lake - Temiskaming Shores - Temagami

A warm and increasingly humid airmass will continue streaming into the regions from the south.

A borderline heat warning criteria is expected to be reached again today.

Increasing cloudiness today with a 30 per cent chance of showers this afternoon with risk of a thunderstorm. Wind becoming southwest at 20 km/h this afternoon. High 29. Humidex 35. UV index 7 or high.

A cold front will move through Monday to bring an end to the heat.

The risks are greater for young children, pregnant women, older adults, people with chronic illnesses, and people working or exercising outdoors.

Watch for the effects of heat illness: swelling, rash, cramps, fainting, heat exhaustion, heatstroke, and the worsening of some health conditions.

Drink plenty of water even before you feel thirsty and stay in a cool place.

Check on older family, friends and neighbours. Make sure they are cool and drinking water

Seek a cool place such as a tree-shaded area, swimming pool, shower or bath, or air-conditioned spot like a public building.

Shade yourself with an umbrella or a wide-brimmed hat.

Never leave people or pets inside a parked vehicle.

And don't forget about dear ol' Dad!

Here's a little Mungo Jerry to get you in the mood!
