Call to local musicians to 'share the music' of Summertime

The North Bay Symphony has a great idea to kick off summertime.

"We're encouraging instrumentalists and singers of all kinds to perform in their neighbourhoods this Sunday at 6 p.m. ," says Leanne Miners, NBSO Marketing Coordinator. "While we can’t share the music in the concert hall we can share it in our neighbourhoods!"

Miners is inviting local musicians to join the North Bay Symphony and North Bay’s J.O.Y. Band by picking up an instrument or singing along from your front lawn or back deck to celebrate the first day of summer this Sunday, June 21.

"What better music to honour the change in season than George Gershwin’s “Summertime” from the opera Porgy & Bess. Many thanks to Neil Kennedy for creating the sheet music for all different instruments to be performing in the same key, so even while we’re physically apart we can perform the music together."

Find all the details and download your sheet music here.

The story is about Porgy, a disabled black street-beggar living in the slums of Charleston. It deals with his attempts to rescue Bess from the clutches of her violent and possessive lover, and Sportin' Life, her drug dealer.

All those who participate are encouraged to send your photos and videos of your performance to Leanne Miners at the Symphony:  lminers.nbso@gmail.com to be posted online for everyone to enjoy.
