It's seen by some as the unofficial end of winter...the removal of ice huts from area lakes.
Today, March 31st is the deadline for having the shacks off the ice on Lake Nipissing and surrounding lakes, although the deadline changes in different parts of the province.
Owners have to display a registration number on the outside of the ice hut at least 2.5 inches high (6.3 cm) so MNRF officers can identify the owner should the hut not be removed in time.
Anglers who don’t remove their huts by the deadline could face a maximum fine of $200.
Ice hut owners are also responsible for taking their garbage and debris with them so it doesn't end up on area beaches when the ice melts.
