Hike for Hospice has a goal of $75,000 this year

'We do receive some funding from the Ontario Government, but that funding is very specific and only covers certain needs. We have to make up for the required balance to support our operations and to make sure we can continue to provide this very valuable service'

The  Nipissing Serenity Hospice Hike for Hospice fundraiser is back this year, as a hybrid event, with an in-person and a virtual hike, after three years of hosting the event virtually only.

Hike for Hospice will take place on Thanksgiving Weekend, October 6-9.

The in-person hike and barbecue will take place at the Hospice from noon till 2:30 on October 6. Participants who are not local are still encouraged to register, raise funds online, or donate to a team and then celebrate their accomplishments with a hike or walk around the block or in their community, any time during the weekend.

Since its inception in 2016, Hike for Hospice has raised over $470,000.

“We appreciate all the support that we've had from the communities that we serve. The ongoing commitment never ceases to amaze us. We are truly grateful.” said Gil Pharand, Executive Director.

Hike for Hospice has a goal of $75,000 this year.

“We do receive some funding from the Ontario Government, but that funding is very specific and only covers certain needs. We have to make up for the required balance to support our operations and to make sure we can continue to provide this very valuable service,” said Pharand. “And that's where Hike for Hospice comes in.”

Tammy Megginson is the community ambassador for Hike for Hospice this year. Tammy's husband of 41 years, Greg, was a resident at the hospice. Megginson believes that the support that she, her husband, and their family received was amazing.

“We were here during the height of Covid but we were able to be together as a family when it mattered the most. Everything was free. We were fed, we were supported and we felt like our focus could be on Greg”. Megginson adds, “For Greg, the Hospice was his resort. For me, it was my heaven.”
