Hey kids the City wants your ideas on how to end trash

The City of North Bay announced today the creation of an online contest for city wide high school students in grades 9 through 12.

Contest details can be found at www.blueboxit.ca.

The contest was devised by the City of North Bay Waste Resources Liaison Committee to engage community youth in a discussion about using the Blue Box for recycling.

“For more than two decades, the City of North Bay has been recycling and through that time the blue box has been a symbol of our community commitment for a safer, cleaner environment,” said Mayor Al McDonald.

Contest sponsors, TWG Communications and Regan Pictures generously donated the production of a sample video, which can be viewed at www.blueboxit.ca, as well as promotional posters for display in area high schools and the blueboxit.ca Web site where participants can upload their video submissions and access contest details.

“The best way to promote an online video contest is by using a video to tell the story,” said Committee Chair, Roxanne Ferguson. “Students can view our sample video, plan their own short movie, and then upload their work.”

Prizes for this juried contest are: 1st prize is an iPad4, 2nd prize is a $250 Staples gift certificate and 3rd prize is a $150 Staples gift certificate. All prizes generously donated by Miller Waste Systems.

Submissions are to be short, less than a minute in length, and must tell a brief Blue Box story. Videos should clearly demonstrate some production value in terms of scripting, editing, use of music, etc. Videos can be funny and silly or serious in nature.

“The whole idea is for students in grades 9 through 12 to have fun and to be involved,” said Fergsuon. “We look forward to getting a wide variety of submissions.”
