A young member of the Cerasia family learns the joy of celebrating the grape harvest and his heritage during the 9th Annual Grape Stomping Festival Saturday night at the Davedi Club.

Grape stomping was once described by the late Mr. Hub Fedeli is an Italian tradition that goes back to the Bacchanalian era. He said harvesting the grapes demonstrated the closeness of family and community, the pride in making the wine and sharing the work, and that emotion and was evident as his son, Mayor Vic Fedeli, and other Davedi Club members celebrated the 9th Annual Grape Stomping Festival Saturday night.

Young and old attended the sold out event that saw club members, local celebrities, and politicians of all ethnic backgrounds crushing the grapes between their toes and making the sweet juice that will later be turned into wine.

The festival started out with mostly Italian club members, but over the years has welcomed people of ethnic backgrounds including French, English, Scottish, Pilipino, Portuguese, and German.

The event kicked off with a cheque presentation to the Canadian Red Cross for $12,178.39 to be applied to rebuilding efforts in the Abruzzo region of Italy where a devastating earthquake hit on April 6th of this year.

The juice from the stomping was later raffled off.
