This morning, the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) met with Canada Post Corporation and officially served notice to bargain.

At the same time, the union submitted a letter to the Minister of Labour requesting that she appoint mediators from the outset is to assist the parties in achieving a negotiated contract.

The request for mediation does not start any countdown to acquiring the right to lockout or strike.

The next step will be to present demands to Canada Post, on a date to be determined shortly.

The contracts expire December 31st for Rural members and January 31st for Urban members, said Keith Bradford, President of Local 576.
