Firefighters from Station One and Two saved an unconscious person Fire Department officials say was cooking while intoxicated and then fell asleep with dinner burning in the kitchen.

The incident happened in an apartment on Rose Avenue around 6 p.m. last Thursday.

“The cooking had generated an incredible amount of smoke and was in the early stages of becoming an incendiary incident,” said Deputy Chief Greg Saunders.

“The tenant had no idea of the extent of the danger.”

Saunders says the crews were on scene quickly and did what was necessary to save the unsuspecting victim.

“Crews were on scene within four minutes and had the door open and the tenant removed from danger within moments,” Saunders said about the firefighter's quick action.

“Crews had to break two windows to accomplish the necessary venting of the unit and eliminate the hazard.”

Saunders says two people were taken to hospital during the March 31st incident.

The Deputy Chief says the late March incident shows the importance of paying attention to what is on your stove when cooking.

“People do not realize the dangers from being inattentive to their cooking,” Saunders said.

“One unfortunate resident earlier this year passed away due to injuries he sustained in very similar circumstances.  The first fire fatality in which I was involved with 20 years ago also involved a person cooking while intoxicated."
