False name given in human trafficking case

Last month BayToday told a story of an Ottawa man facing human trafficking charges after a disturbance Friday, November 1 at a motel on Lakeshore Drive.

North Bay Police now say they were given a false name at the time, and have also announced new charges.

At the time police said they arrested Gemie Muya, 26, of Ottawa, but today said, "The investigation has revealed that the accused originally provided police with a false name."

Police started the investigation after a man and a woman had an argument that turned violent. The investigation revealed the woman was an escort involved in a working relationship with the man.

Arnold Muamba Kassongo, 25, of Ottawa is charged with:

  • Trafficking in persons
  • Material benefit resulting from trafficking in persons
  • Assault
  • Possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime under $5,000
  • Obstruct police;
  • Identity theft;
  • Acknowledging instrument in a false name
  • Breach of probation

Kassongo remains in custody and will make his next appearance at the North Bay Courthouse on Dec. 5.
