Don't paint your bus 'chrome yellow'

We hadn't seen the paint charge before, so we looked it up.

This OPP release caught our eye this morning.

Seems that early in the afternoon on November 14, OPP officers were on patrol in Parry Sound when they noticed a yellow school bus being operated.

They looked closer and found a licence plate offence, so they pulled the bus over.

As a result of the investigation,

Jeffrey Oickle, 59 years of age from Parry Sound, was charged with;

  • Bus Not Used to Transport Children, Painted Chrome Yellow, contrary to section 175(3) of the Highway Traffic Act

  • Use Plate Not Authorized For Vehicle,

  • Operate Motor Vehicle Without Insurance,

We hadn't seen the paint charge before, so we looked it up.

The law says, "No bus, except a bus that at any time during its current validation period is used to transport children or to transport adults who have developmental disabilities, shall be painted chrome yellow." Breaking that law is a $110 fine.

Further, " No motor vehicle on a highway, other than a school bus, shall have displayed thereon the words 'school bus'."

Constable Kyle Ney told BayToday that he can't recall seeing that charge laid during his career, so it is unusual. He also says if you plan to buy an old school bus, make sure you repaint it a different colour.

Oickle will appear at the Ontario Court of Justice on December 6, to answer to his charges.
