A COVID surge in this district has set a new record for active cases, now at 116, as 33 new ones were added Thursday.

The North Bay Parry Sound Health Unit reports that 19 new cases came from Nipissing while Parry Sound accounted for 14. None is currently hospitalized with the disease.

The total number now sits at 1,106. There are 982 resolved and the fully vaccinated now is at 85 per cent of those 12+.

An outbreak was declared on Dec. 17 involving eight cases at a local workplace according to the Health Unit.

Today the hospital said it was struggling with calls to its assessment centre and asked residents to be patient.

And Ontario broke a record with 5,790 new COVID cases Thursday.

More upswings in COVID-19 infections were reported Thursday in Ontario and Quebec, as a pair of British studies appeared to confirm earlier research suggesting the Omicron variant is milder than the Delta mutation.

Health officials in Ontario reported 5,790 new cases, a tally well above the previous single-day high of 4,812 recorded back in April. The province also confirmed seven new deaths attributed to the virus.
