Chippewa Secondary School Business students came away winners at the Annual DECA Regional Competition last week in Kingston. Nine Chippewa business students involved in the Business–Specialist High Skills Major program at Chippewa competed against a field of over 200 students, mostly from the Kingston, Simcoe and Durham region. Chippewa is the only school from Northern Ontario to compete at DECA and all nine competitors qualified to move onto the Provincial Competition held in Toronto in February, 2008. Students will then have to qualify again to be eligible to compete at the International Competition held in Florida in May, 2008.

DECA students are challenged to showcase their skills at competitions by applying what they learn in the classroom to the reality of today's business world. They are graded on a one hour 100 question multiple choice exam and an oral presentation. Students receive a case study and have a set amount of time to analyze and present their ideas to business judges. They can choose to enter individual events or work as a team.

Leading the way in the Individual Series Event was George Wang winning a 3rd place medal overall in the Business Services Marketing category. Top honours in the Management Team Decision Making Events with a 2nd place finish were Matt Caruso and Kevin Miller for Sports and Entertainment Marketing followed closely by Rebecca Duguay and Erica Daniel in Financial Analysis with 3rd place medals.

Other top 10 ribbons were awarded to Shannon Hueston for Apparel & Accessories Marketing, Jennifer Rowe for Accounting Applications and the team of Melissa Cantin and Justine Yerlitz for the Travel and Tourism Marketing Team Management Event.

DECA, originally founded as the Distributive Education Clubs of America in 1946, is an extra-curricular organization that enriches the high school learning experience by giving students hands-on experiences in the fields of business, finance, marketing, and entrepreneurship. Over 6000 high-school students in Canada and the U.S are DECA members that engage in fundraising events, attend conferences, compete to earn scholarships, improve their leadership skills and gain experience for future successful business careers.
