Dr. Jim Chirico is aware that there is frustration in the community relating to the additional lockdown measures that have been put in place in the North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit.

The conversation about lockdown restrictions impact on mental health has travelled far beyond the health unit boundaries of the North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit.

Chirico says he realizes the strain on some who want to gather with family and friends or snowmobile on the closed area trails.

"It is important to remember that current restrictions are temporary and put in place to protect the health of our communities," Chirico told BayToday in an email earlier this week.

"The Health Unit encourages everyone to prioritize their mental health always and especially at this time. There are many ways to strengthen mental health and improve one’s ability to cope with mental distress."

Chirico says the five ways to well-being are free, simple actions known to improve well-being:

  • Connect. Maintaining social connections is critical to health. There are many ways to safely connect with loved ones, friends, and neighbours. Plan regular phone calls, write a letter, text, or email. Remember to check in with those in your life that may be feeling isolated, anxious, or depressed. Connect with professional mental health support if needed.
  • Be Active. Moving your body can help reduce stress and symptoms of anxiety. As little as 10 minutes can boost your mood. There are a number of ways to be active, such as walking, running, hiking, biking, or playing outside with those in your household.
  • Take Notice. Take time to pause and be mindful of even the simplest pleasant activities during your day. Learn skills to help you relax and reduce stress such as deep breathing or mindfulness meditation. Take a moment to pause in nature. Being in nature in known to reduce stress hormones in the brain.
  • Keep Learning. Be curious about the world around you and develop skills or hobbies that give you joy and pride. Learning new things can make you feel more confident. Learning new skills and revisiting old ones can help you grow and open you up to new possibilities and opportunities.
  • Give. Giving your time, presence, or help to others can make you feel good. It can also help you create connections with people around you.

Chirico believes it is important to remember that it’s okay to not be okay and reach out for support from loved ones or mental health services if needed.
