At its regular meeting held on June 26, 2007, the Nipissing-Parry Sound Catholic District School Board approved its 2007-2008 Budget of $40,226,934 for submission to the Ministry of Education.

The Board is pleased to announce that the estimated operating expenditures [$38,337,075] and capital and non-operating expenditures [$1,889,859] have been matched with revenue projections, producing a balanced budget again this year. The 2007-2008 Budget did not require the use of reserve funds, an improvement over last year where 1.75 per cent of the budget was funded through reserves. This was achieved through operating expenditure levels consistent with or below those of previous years in areas which would not impact programs and services to students.

The Board continues to place as much emphasis as possible on expenditures into areas supporting student achievement and success. Board Chair Don Houle said he is extremely pleased with the 2007-2008 Budget and its promising role in sustaining high quality education in Nipissing-Parry Sound English Catholic schools.

Budget highlights include:
• A total of 5.3 FTE literacy teachers system-wide
• Full day, everyday Junior and Senior Kindergarten
• Extension of Integrated Studies program to senior division, expansion of Credit Recovery and full deployment of 3.0 FTE Student Success Teachers at secondary
• New Family Life programs for grades 1 and 2
• Increased school secretarial support improving services to students, staff and parents
• Enhancement of Learning with Technology initiatives: additional 5 wireless mobile laptop labs, for a total of 8 at elementary; upgrades to Information Technology labs at SJSH; and 0.5 FTE learning with technology elementary support teacher
• Phase 3 Code Special Education Assistive Technology project, “Communication for All”, and Phase 2 of the OPA Assessment Project
• Aboriginal education programs for students and Native awareness professional development for staff

Despite the challenges of declining enrolment, our Board has seen unwavering efforts put forth by its Senior Administration team and Trustees in working within the parameters of the Province’s funding allocation to balance this budget. Our fiscal focus remains steadily in line with our guiding principles for high quality education and equal learning opportunities for all learners.
