Area law enforcement agencies the launch the annual Festive R.I.D.E. (Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere) campaign Friday.

The campaign will kick off  Friday at 2 p.m. at Wasi Corners in Callander.

R.I.D.E. traffic stops will continue throughout the holiday season until January 3rd.

“Our traffic and patrol officers will be conducting R.I.D.E. stops over the holiday season to ensure that the citizens of North Bay and Callander are safe on our roads,” said Chief Paul Cook, North Bay Police Service. “We remind drivers to stay alert and sober when behind the wheel. We encourage the public to help us stop impaired drivers, before they harm themselves or others, by calling 911 if they know or suspect someone is driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.”

So far this year city police have laid 55 impaired driving charges, which is in line with previous years.

In 2012, 85 charges were laid.

While the focus for the Festive R.I.D.E. campaign is during the holiday season, the program runs across the province, all year long.
