Cache of guns stolen during break in near Mattawa

Owner returned to find mischief to his property and a gun safe containing firearms removed from the residence

Three semi-automatic handguns and four bolt-action rifles have not been recovered despite OPP charging a suspect in a Calvin Township break-in on New Year's Eve or day.

The North Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is continuing the investigation of a break and enter to a seasonal residence on Peddlers Drive.

The break and enter is believed to have occurred between December 31, 2020 and January 1, 2021, when the owner returned to find mischief to his property and a gun safe containing firearms removed from the residence.

The firearms are described as:

  • A semi-automatic .40 caliber handgun.
  • A semi-automatic .22 caliber handgun.
  • A semi-automatic 9 mm handgun.
  • A bolt action .22 caliber rifle.
  • A bolt action .303 caliber rifle.
  • A bolt action 7.62 mm rifle.
  • A semi-automatic .44 caliber rifle.
  • Two air rifles.

As a result of the police investigation, Marian Sirbu, 44, of Papineau-Cameron Township was arrested and charged with:

  • Break and enter
  • Two counts of mischief under $5,000

The investigation is continuing, and the stolen firearms and safe have not been recovered.
