Black Friday shopping frenzy in North Bay

“Black Friday sales have started to surface much earlier turning a day of sales into a week or two of sales.”

Parking was at a premium all day long at Northgate Shopping Centre for the Black Friday sales.

Shoppers across the city waited patiently before the crack of dawn to ensure they were first in line to get to some of the Black Friday sales.

“We opened at 7 a.m. and had approximately 100 customers in line when we opened,” said Julie Jenkins, General Manager of Leon’s Furniture in North Bay.

Jordanna Grant says the same thing happened in front of Sears, Walmart and Best Buy at the Northgate Shopping Centre.

“The shopping centre opened at 8 a.m. and by 9 a.m. things had picked up quite a bit,” said Grant, the Marketing Director at Northgate Shopping Centre.

Grant says Black Friday sales continue to grow in popularity.

“Black Friday sales have started to surface much earlier turning a day of sales into a week or two of sales,” she said.

“Typically the sales span from the Friday prior to Black Friday to the Friday after. That being said the sales on actual ‘Black Friday’ tend to be better than any other day.”

While Black Friday is gaining that popularity, Jenkins admits Boxing Day is still important.

“Our Black Friday Event has become a key sales period over the last three years; however our experience to date does not indicate it is replacing Boxing Day,” stated the local Leon’s general manager.

But regardless of which big sale you are talking about, it’s the discounts today and on the 26th of December that bring the shoppers in droves.

“Everything is 50% off at Gap today and 30% off at Roots,” Grant said about some of the sales at Northgate Shopping Centre.

“In addition everything is 30-60% off at Tip Top for all of the guys out there.  Realistically every store has great deals happening and it is a prime time to shop.”
