Complaints by motorists about the behaviour of e-bike riders have prompted a warning from city police.

Staff Sergeant Richard Dubeau says in a news release that "the public is reminded that electric scooters are to follow the same rules of the road as a bicycle, riding on the road as close to the right as possible."

Motorists must keep one-metre distance when overtaking a bicycle or scooter.

Dubeau says complaints are being received of scooters riding in the centre lane instead of the curb lane.

"Failing to keep right is an $85 fine and a $20 victim of Crime surcharge," he adds.
