After devoting many years to the HIV/AIDS movement in Canada, Jennifer Furtney has announced her decision to retire as Executive Director of the AIDS Committee of North Bay and Area (ACNBA), effective September 2008.

“It has been a privilege to serve our community and the board of directors over the past 12 years” Ms. Furtney said.

The ACNBA is a community-based non-profit organization serving the people of North Bay and a wide surrounding area. Men, women and children affected or infected by HIV/AIDS receive support, advocacy and liaison services. Through education, outreach strategies, the ACNBA also works for the entire community to increase awareness and limit the spread of the virus.

Under Ms. Furtney’s leadership, the vital work performed by the ACNBA has enhanced the lives of many people, locally, provincially and nationally. Throughout her time with the AIDS Committee of North Bay and Area Jennifer has been a mentor to many individuals who are now also leaders in the AIDS movement.

Ms.Furtney is an indispensable member of the community, having served on numerous boards including Canadian Mental Health Association, Nipissing Legal Clinic, North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit. She has also served on the boards of the Ontario AIDS Network, the Ontario HIV Treatment Network and the Canadian Treatment Access Council. Her passion and commitment to serving others is extraordinary.

The board of directors is working to ensure a seamless transition of leadership and have the challenging job of replacing a truly great leader in the community.

The AIDS Committee of North Bay and Area wishes to express our sincere gratitude to Ms. Furtney. Her dedication and energy are boundless and she will be greatly missed.
