Afternoon fire on Wallace Road (UPDATE)

The call came in just before 3 p.m.

Fire crews battled what was initially reported as a structure fire at 281 Wallace Rd. in the west section of North Bay this afternoon.

The call came in just before 3 p.m.

It's at the site of a former chemical plant, which is now up for sale and has seen some demolition work in the past couple of months.

Fire Chief Jason Whiteley told BayToday it was more of a chemical reaction than a normal fire.

There is a strong odour in the air but no sign of flames or smoke by 3:30 when BayToday arrived at the scene.

The chemicals were initially thought to be caustic soda but right now the hazardous materials team cannot confirm exactly what they are dealing with.

Crews have returned to the scene for precaution and Whiteley says they will continue to stay there on standby until the chemicals are properly contained to ensure there is no health concern to the public in the Wallace road area.
