Letter to the editor: Poachers aren't hunters

Night hunting and animal waste are not only highly illegal, they are beyond reproach among our fold
Moose
I’m writing in response to a recent letter to the editor called “ Gross animal wasting by hunters needs to stop”. I suppose this is my own “letter to the editor”.

This article was a response to the recent discovery of several moose, killed and left to rot, in the North Bay area. Although it was well-intentioned, the letter fell short in terms of understanding what is actually going on, and that has myself and many others like me concerned.

The people doing this are not “hunters”, they are poachers and should be labeled as such. Night hunting and animal waste are not only highly illegal, they are beyond reproach among our fold. If you want to talk to a group of people who are disgusted and infuriated by these actions, find yourself a couple of hunters. Really.

In sharing this letter without elaboration, however well-intentioned, you are perpetuating the hatred that so many people already have for us. Please do better. The vast majority of hunters care deeply for our natural resources and for the animals themselves, however surprising that may seem to some, and we certainly do not deserve to be lumped in with the likes of whoever is poaching these moose.
