Community Builders Awards: Environment Award celebrates group dedicated to preserving Laurier Woods for future generations

Friends of Laurier Woods have undertaken significant fundraising efforts to purchase land, maintain trails within conservation area

The Friends of Laurier Woods was established in 1989 as a non-profit, charitable organization committed to preserving the ecological and cultural integrity of the woods, enabling it to last as a legacy for future generations.

They are a passionate group of volunteers who focus their time and energy on land conservation, land-use planning and bringing tourism, recreation, education and scientific research opportunities to the conservation area.

Their goal is to maintain the Laurier Woods Conservation Area as a natural sanctuary in an urban setting. Together with other organizations and agencies, the Friends of Laurier Woods spearheaded a campaign to save the area from urban encroachment, having purchased land in 1996, 2001, 2009 and 2011 which required significant fundraising efforts to make happen.

They have also helped develop 6.5 km of safe walking trails to make nature and outdoor physical activity more accessible.

The group hosts educational hikes and events, bird-watching events and facilitates passive recreation and education so that awareness and protection of Laurier Woods’ key features are highlighted.

This award recognizes a person or group that has had an important positive impact on our environment, both man-made and natural.

Congratulations to the Friends of Laurier Woods!

This award is proudly sponsored by North Bay Hydro.
