Wildcats number one seed at OFSAA

It’s not common to be called the favourites at OFSAA when you weren’t even considered the team to beat at NOSSA. But that’s exactly what’s happened to the Widdifield Wildcats Senior Girls Volleyball team.

The local Cats upset the Lo-Ellen Park Knights 2-0 to win NOSSA “AA” sr. girls volleyball title on the weekend at the Robert Surtees Athletic Centre at Nipissing University.

The Sudbury squad which will join the Wildcats at OFSAA was considered one of the provinces best and that NOSSA victory over the Knights allowed the North Bay school to grab the ever important top seed at the provincial championship.

“It’s hard to keep them focused but they’ve got to keep everything in tune to what we’ve done all year and bring it all together at OFSAA like all the other teams are going to do,” said Wildcats co-coach Mark Hopper.

The team will be departing on Sunday for a very long bus ride to Dryden. The tournament itself begins on March 7th.

“We are just thinking about getting ready so we are able to compete they are focusing not just on the trip itself but on the performance of the players while we are there,” said co-coach Dan Gosselin at practice Wednesday afternoon at Nipissing University.

“Our focus is pretty much on winning,” said Wildcats captain Shawna Chadbourn when asked about the 18 hour bus ride the team will have to endure before stepping onto the court.

“We aren’t upset about the drive we don’t really care because we bond well as a team, so we’ll have fun either way and work well as a team too.”

Donations

Gosselin says going to OFSAA comes with a price as the bus rental is about $8,000.00. Any financial donations can be dropped of at Widdifield S.S. or at Gateway Physiotherapy.
