Views from the Couch

Well it has been a while, but with quite a bit of time on my hands I have decided to start this thing back up. Hopefully it will be more consistent and can stir up some interesting, and CLEAN, sports debates.

Well it has been a while, but with quite a bit of time on my hands I have decided to start this thing back up. Hopefully it will be more consistent and can stir up some interesting, and CLEAN, sports debates. It is a rant about anything and everything in the world of sports. This is my rant; therefore, these are my opinions. You can agree with me, you can disagree, it doesn’t really matter; the following are just my views from the couch.

The NFL final four…

Well the AFC conference final is not all that shocking, albeit I did not think the Colts D could make Billy Volek look like Joe Montana. However, if someone claims they predicted the NFC final before the season started… to you I say “LIAR”. I’ll start with the real Super Bowl between the Chargers and Pats. Although San Diego showed a ton of heart winning in Indy, there is just no reason to believe New England can be stopped. Even though I am not a fan of the Pats, I really want to see them win it all so that 30 years from now I can look back and remember that I watched this happen. The NFC championship is quite the toss up seeing as Green Bay is practically unbeatable at home during the playoffs and the G Men are practically unbeatable when they are on the road this season. Weather will likely play a major role, especially because the game is being played at night. However, I think that destiny will be an even stronger force Sunday night and Brett will get one more shot at a ring.

Is it time for NCAA College basketball to make a change?

Being a huge college basketball fan, I can not help but think that it is time for the NCAA to make some type of change to its rules. More specifically, they should consider implementing a 24 second shot clock. For those of you who do not follow the game closely, here are some stats from the past week: Savannah State loses 82-25 while scoring FOUR points in the second half. St. Louis drops a whopping 20 points… for the entire game in a 49-20 loss versus George Washington. Iowa and Michigan State shot out the lights in a 43-36 victory for the Hawkeyes. Sure these scores do not represent the norm; however it does represent the diminishing amount of offense in the game today. Maybe a shot clock change would not be the cure, but something has to change before these scores become regular occurrences.

A Hidden gem…

One of the most grueling sporting events in the world is taking place right now; and most people are not even aware of it. The Australian Open tennis tournament pits the top tennis players in the world against one another under grotesque conditions to see who can last an entire match, let alone the entire tournament. It is not uncommon for temperatures to reach upwards of 100 degrees Fahrenheit, with players sometimes playing four hour marathon matches. It is athleticism at its finest. If that were not enough, one of the greatest athletes of our generation, Roger Federer, is attempting to move into second place on the all-time Grand Slam titles list with 13. That would put him one behind Pete Sampras for the most in history.

UFC is starting to get greedy…

I am a big UFC fan and try not to miss any of their pay per views, however this Saturday I think I am going to boycott UFC 80, and I hope others will follow my lead. The pay per view is across the pond and will be live on pay per view at 3 pm EST. Now every other time when this happens UFC will show the event on Spike TV starting at 10 pm, however this time the UFC is going to show it on PPV again. In the age of the internet this is just a greedy move because everyone will know the results come the evening showing. This move is just Dana White being a money grubbing jerk now that his promotion has made it big. Plus the card is not even that great to begin with as UFC Fight Night on the 23rd is likely going to be much better.

On the topic of UFC, the Pay Per View in Montreal scheduled for April 19th is shaping up to be one main event after the other. Rumours include Matt Serra vs. GSP, Rich Franklin vs. Travis Lutter, and Shogun Rua vs. Sean Sherk.
