Bay City Ballers and The 3’s League in association with 3 on3 Basketball Canada is bringing “We The North FIBA 3x3 Tournament” to North Bay.

The league is hosting the first ever FIBA-endorsed 3x3 tournament in northern Ontario this Saturday, March 2, at the Canadore College main gym.

With a prize purse of $3,000 sponsored by Demarco Lucenti Insurance, over 12 teams have registered with several out-of-town teams attending, including representation from Atlanta Georgia, Toronto, Ottawa and North Bay.

"Several local legends as well as up-and-coming ballers are sure to put on a show."

From the bustling streets of America to the Olympics – 3x3 basketball has shot into the limelight with blistering speed.

Having originated as street basketball in the urban and semi-urban areas of the USA in the late 1980s, the game, at its core, is a condensed form of traditional full-court basketball. However, it wasn’t long before the backyard pastime became a cultural phenomenon.

Its soaring popularity eventually saw it being structured into a professional sport, with official rules sanctioned by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA), into the game that we know as 3x3 basketball today.

This tournament will include entertainment from DJ Kuttin Korners, as well as Kory Benoit.

"We are inviting the people of North Bay to take in our 3-point contest and halftime show as you witness the best competition north of Toronto," the release stated.

Organizers ask fans to bring a non-perishable food item for the North Bay Food Bank.

The action starts at 9:30 a.m. with playoffs commencing at about 12:30.

"Your support will help keep this tournament running for years to come," the organizers stated in a release.

"This Basketball extravaganza wouldn’t be possible without the generous support of our many sponsors. Please support them as they help to grow the sport of basketball in our community," the release continued.
