Stingers silver at NOHA tourney

Timmins – The West Ferris Minor Sports “North Bay Stingers” Peewee 'AA' hockey team brought home a silver medal from the NOHA Tournament of Champions, this past weekend.

The North Bay squad split their games in double round robin play that also included the Sudbury Bulldogs and host Timmins Ready-Quip Rampage. Timmins topped the round robin standings going 2-1-1 and Sudbury finished third with a 1-2-1 mark.

In round robin play on Friday the Stingers opened with a 5-3 win over Sudbury; in game two Timmins topped the Stingers 3-2. On Saturday the Stingers defeated Timmins 4-3 and fell short 6-3 to Sudbury.

In Sunday’s championship game against host Timmins, the score remained 0-0 after one period. Timmins scored five minutes into the second period and clinched the 2-0 win scoring with 3 minutes remaining in the third. The Stingers were frustrated with 16 minutes in penalties in the final twenty minutes of play.

The second place finish earned the Stingers a spot in the OHF Championships April 10-13 back in Timmins. Two spots are reserved for the host association in the annual championship event that will see a total of five teams competing for the provincial title. Other participating peewee 'AA' associations include the Alliance, GTHL and the OMHA.

The North Bay Stingers next see action in the NDHL Bantam Rep playoffs at the end of the month. The Stingers will be competing in the CAN/AM Challenge Cup in Lake Placid, NY, April 2-6.
