Spitfires fly past Trappers

SUDBURY, ON - The Windsor Jr. Spitfires scored three times in the third period to defeat the North Bay Midget AAA Trappers 7-4 at the Central Regional Midget AAA Championships on Tuesday afternoon.  

The Spitfires got going early on starter Joel Rainville taking a 2-0 lead less than 2 minutes into the game on goals by Cole Welsh and Jacob Ross.   

Matt Hardwick got the Trappers back on course with a goal at 5:47 as the Spits led 2-1 after one.  

The Trappers battled hard in the middle frame as Nick Davis and Jacob Gravelle scored less than two minutes apart to take a 3-2 lead.  

However, the Spitfires responded with a pair of quick goals late in the period to re-take the lead.  

Joe Whittet scored late in the period to make it 4-4 after two periods of play.   

Rainville suffered the loss making 26 stops as the Trappers fall to 1-1 in the tournament.  

Ian Denomme contributed with two assists in the loss.  

The Trappers are back on the ice tomorrow night for a re-match of the GNML final as they take on the host Sudbury Nickel Capital Wolves.  Puck drop is set for 7 p.m. at Countryside arena in Sudbury.
