The North Bay Trappers looking to win their first Great North Midget League title since 2001, fell behind 3-0 in the first period and never got on track as the visiting Sudbury Nickel Capital Wolves won the deciding game of the series 4-1 on Memorial Gardens ice tonight.
Matt Dokis Dupuis, Parker Savard and Ethan Lavallee staked the visitors to the big 3-0 lead as they scored three times on their first six shots on Trappers starter Joel Rainville who was pulled after one period of work in favour of Drew Joyal.
The Trappers struggled all night long finding a way to beat Wolves netminder Alex Vendette, who kept the Trappers off the board until late in the third period when Jacob Peterson-Galema put home a rebound with just over five minutes left in regulation time.
However, with the net empty Brandon Atkins fired home a long shot that hit the twine and secured the 4-1 win.
For the Trappers it was a disappointing end to the season as they held a 2-1 series lead but then elected to take a long break for the OHL Cup and return to action Tuesday and Wednesday of this week to finish off the series.
The Wolves though gathered momentum on Tuesday night when they were victorious in overtime 3-2.
That momentum and maybe some nerves played a part for the Trappers players who were playing in front of a Memorial Gardens crowd of more than 700 fans for the deciding game of the Great North Midget League season.
The Trappers do have a chance for redemption as they will take the next few days off and then prepare to head to Sudbury to take part in the Central Regional Major Midget AAA Championships which are being hosted by the Nickel Capital Wolves starting next Monday.
