Resilient Chippewa juniors crowned NOSSA hoops champs

Ousted by their rivals in the NDA semis, Chippewa focused instead on winning what would be the last game of the junior basketball season — the NOSSA final

Locals made the drive to Sudbury's Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School on Saturday to watch two North Bay basketball rivals compete in the NOSSA 'AA/AAA' title game.

The Chippewa junior boys' basketball team rebounded from a loss to the Trojans in the NDA semi-finals with a resounding 50-41 triumph, going from tournament wildcards to champs in dropping the NDA playoff winners.

Head coach Mike Mitchell smiled from ear to ear as he left the court with his Chippewa players, pleased with the way they regrouped following the early playoff loss in North Bay and focused on winning Chippewa's first NOSSA junior boys' title since 2008.

The NOSSA final was tied at 25 at the half but the Trojans' shooters went cold and Chippewa pulled away. Charlie Smith led Chippewa with 23 points and Raine Bradley chipped in with 10 and was a force on the boards.

Rowan Waye scored 20 points in defeat for the Trojans and Logan Meunier had 10.

In the all-Sudbury senior NOSSA 'AA/AAA' final, the Lo-Ellen Park Knights won on their home court, defeating Lasalle.
