The Y Norsemen and Valkyries weightlifting teams held their annual club contest on Saturday at the YMCA. The competition, dubbed the Ray Hamilton Classic, featured 30 juniors in the field of 31 entrants and included one guest lifter, Ashton Roy, from Roy’s Gym in Sudbury. The contest also served as the final selection meet for the Ontario under-16 team.

In the women’s competition the weight class winners included: Devynn Crocker at 38 kilos, McKenzie Crocker at 44, Celyne Begin at 53, Amanda Mitchell at 58, Samantha Scully at 63, and Kayla Turner at 69. The top novice awards went to Carley Tougas and McKenzie Crocker. Amanda Mitchell won the most improved lifter trophy.

In the men’s portion of the contest the winners in the various divisions were: Reid Martel at 40 kilos, Mike Willis at 46, Dominic Coote at 51, Cody Giroux at 56, Andrew Bell at 62, Chad Mathieu at 69, David Staniszewski at 85, and Ryan Allan at 94 kilos. The top novice male awards went to Cody Giroux and Ryan Allan. The most improved title went to Chad Mathieu.

At the conclusion of the contest the final selections for the Ontario under-16 team were announced. The ten member team will compete at the 39th annual Young Louis Cyr Tournament in Montreal on May 6. Those making the cut from Saturday’s contest were Valkyries Amanda Mitchell and Courtney Simkins. Based on earlier performances, teammates Alicia Houghton and Stavrula Liritzis will also compete in Montreal. Norsemen club members on the provincial team include Jarrad Larmand and Morgan Brown. Larmand competed on Saturday and was the runner up in the 94 kilo division. Larry Sheppard, Glenn Ogletree, and Melody Ogletree will coach the under-16 squad.
