It wasn’t for a lack of trying, a lack of chances or a lack of effort, but the Nipissing Lakers men’s hockey team came up short Saturday night.

The Lakers went toe-to-toe with the Waterloo Warriors, but it was the Warriors who came away with the 4-2 victory, claiming the two points.

The Warriors scored three times in the third period, including an empty-netter, to take home the win despite being outshot by Nipissing.

The lone goal of the first period came from the Warriors, who led 1-0 after 20 minutes of play.

In the second, Danny Desrochers’ shorthanded goal evened things up as the teams were tied 1-1 through 40 minutes of play.

The Lakers took the lead when Joel Herbert broke in alone and made no mistake, going five-hole on Waterloo goalie Trevor Martin.

The goal was set up by Erik Robichaud, who advanced the puck to Herbert, who showed his great speed, and buried the puck.

The lead lasted about five minutes, but no longer as the Warriors tied the game up.

From there, they added the game-winner just after the midway point of the third period and they sealed the win with a goal into an empty-net, as Nipissing pulled their goal in favour of the extra attacker.

Domenic Graham was very good in the Lakers net, finishing with 32 saves.

The Lakers will not focus on an upcoming road trip when they head to UOIT and RMC next weekend for a pair of games.

Lakers women even record with one-sided win

There was never any reason to panic, but the Nipissing Lakers women's hockey team made sure they didn't fall to 0-2 early in the OUA season.

After a tough outing Friday night, the Lakers rebounded nicely, earning a dominating 5-0 victory over the Windsor Lancers Saturday afternoon on home ice.

Five different goals scorers found the back of the net and goalie Danika Ranger earned her first win and shutout in the OUA, as she made 24 saves through 60 minutes.

The Lakers scored in each period, with Jade Gauthier scoring her team-leading third goal of the season, which ended up the game-winner, in the first period.
She roofed a perfect shot over the blocker hand of the Lancers goalie to make it 1-0, a goal assists by linematesRobyn  Degagne and Maria Dominico.

Leading 1-0 in the second, Nipissing ballooned their lead to 3-0 thanks to a rebound goal by Ava Keis, who tapped home a loose puck and a nice deflection by Bronwyn Bolduc.

Molly Sipprell, Brianna Gaffney and Marilyn Fortin all drew assists on the two second period Lakers goals.

In the third and final period, Nipissing made sure the game was out of reach, tacking on two more goals.

Degagne picked up her first in a Lakers uniform and Dominico scored her second in as many games to make it five.

Local product Danika Ranger, made sure the offence didn't go to waste, as she was perfect in goal in her first start in the OUA.

The Lakers, now 1-1-0, will hit the road for five games, beginning next weekend in Sudbury against Laurentian.
