Athletes at the North Bay Canoe Club were some of the first to take to the water this spring in preparation for their upcoming competitive season.

Zach Pecore, Head Coach, is pleased with his athlete’s progress, and is looking forward to a great summer.

“We’ve been fortunate to have great weather conditions this year for spring training and a dedicated group of athletes,” said Pecore in a release.

The paddlers will compete in their first regatta on July 16th at the North Bay Canoe Club, located on Olmsted Beach. Youth sprint racers are training hard for this with a combination of on-water and dry land training. With many accomplished local and national paddlers in the sport, Pecore encourages his athletes to strive for excellence.

“They are looking up to the best of the sport for inspiration,” Pecore added.

Canadian paddlers have recently made headlines on the world stage. Adam van Koeverden, a four-time Olympic medalist, is a celebrated Canadian athlete and icon in the sport of canoe/kayak. Van Koeverden recently won a bronze medal for his performance in the Men’s K1 500m at the second ICF Sprint World Cup in Czech Republic.

The North Bay Canoe Club has a long and distinguished history and is home to many accomplished athletes. Since its inception in 1968, local paddlers, such as Nancy and Barb Olmstead, Alison Herst, Julie Rivard-Marshall, Dan Howe, Scott Kerrigan, Graham Cobb and Geoff Hibbard, have represented Canada internationally.

It is estimated that in excess of 5,000 local youth paddlers have been introduced to the sport and have participated in various canoeing and kayaking events in North Bay. The Club is gearing up for its 2016 season with its youth Competitive Sprint and Paddle Camp programs. Adult fitness and recreational evening programs are also offered for those looking to stay active and enjoy the beautiful sunsets on Trout Lake

On Saturday June 4th, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., the North Bay Canoe Club will be hosting an Open House at 60 Lakeside Drive. We invite all community members to stop by and learn more about the sport of canoe/kayak. The North Bay Canoe Club will offer free refreshments, equipment demonstrations, program information, and a club tour.
