Nick Paul scores as Team Canada wins World Junior Gold

Team Canada took a 2-0 lead less than 3 minutes into the gold medal game.

Team Canada took a 2-0 lead less than 3 minutes into the gold medal game.

North Bay Battalion forward Nick Paul notched his 3rd of the tournament as he tipped a nice feed from Brayden Point and lifted over the Russian netminder Igor Shestyorkin to give Canada a very early 2-0 lead.

"Point drove down the wing there, I saw him make a quick look so he was going to throw it to the net so I drove the net, had my stick on the ice and it went in," Paul described the goal during the first intermission to TSN's Ryan Rishaug.

Anthony Duclair got Canada on the board in the opening minute.

Paul had been united with his Jake Virtanen and Brayden Point on a line that played together early in camp when Team Canada played the CIS All-Stars prior to the final cuts.

In the second period Paul was bounced up to the second line to play alongside Curtis Lazar and Connor McDavid.

Team Canada built a 5-1 lead only to see Team Russia fight back with 3 goals in less than 4 minutes in the middle frame.

However, Team Canada held the Russians off the scoreboard in the 3rd period as they won 5-4 and finished a perfect 7-0 throughout the tournament.

For the Battalion, it's the first gold medal for a Team Canada World Junior Player since Cody Hodgson won gold for Team Canada in 2009.

Battalion head coach Stan Butler is Team Canada World Junior Alumni, he believes Paul's experience in this tournament was a great one.

"I think Nick is like a lot of players, whatever role the coach chooses for him to play tonight, no matter how much time that is, they have to make sure they give it everything they got for that time period," said Butler during Monday's media conference.

Butler believes the experience of playing on different lines throughout the tournament will be a benefit as well.

"I think it's going to make him a better player, but these type of things are two sided, they are getting to play with him too so.  You have to understand it doesn't matter where Nick comes from and it doesn't matter the stories and how he got there, the reality is he is a world-class elite player and if I'm the Ottawa Senators right now, I'm pretty excited to have him in my lineup, hopefully starting in September."
