North Bay will have another local Olympian to follow on the slopes during the 2018 Winter Games taking place in PyeongChang next month.

The announcement was made by the Canadian Olympic Team at an event at the Fairmont Hotel in Whistler, B.C. at 12 p.m.

The team nominated four males and three females to the Canadian team as they will compete in Slopestyle and Big Air.

Nicholson started snowboarding at the age of seven after receiving a snowboard as a Christmas present.

The 22-year-old has taken off the past two seasons, competing in both the X Games and winning Gold at the World Junior Slopestyle Championships back in 2016.

Some of his other highlights in 2016-17 include a 2nd place performance in Slopestyle at the X-Games in Aspen, third place at the LAXX Open, 4th in Big Air at Alpensia WC, fifth in World Cup Quebec, and fifth on the Dew Tour.

However, his spot was not secure due to a serious injury he sustained late in the 2016-17 season that forced him to have knee surgery and kept him off the slopes until last month.

Now Nicholson is healthy and happy to wear Team Canada colours at the Olympics just like North Bay’s Steve Omischl back in 2010 did in Freestyle Aerials.
