Chippewa forward Andre Landry scored a highlight reel goal in overtime to give Team Scarlet Red a 10-9 victory over Team Gold in the second annual NDA hockey all-star game which took place Monday night at Memorial Gardens.

Landry’s Raider teammate Nik Priebe added three goals for Team Scarlet Red and Alex Piquette from Franco Cite chipped in with two goals along with Bears forward Guy Wallace. Tyler Hummel scored the other marker in the All-Star game.

Team Gold was led offensively by Brad Hummel with three goals. Yves Desjardins of Franco Cite added a pair of goals with singles going to Widdifield’s Corey Raymond, Trojans Scott Britton, Raiders Eric Nicholls, and the Barons Christian Tremblay.

The game also included a skills competition between the first and second periods. In the hardest shot competition league scoring leader Brad Hummel of the Bears hummed a slapshot clocked at 85 miles per hour to win the shooting competition.

“It was harder than I thought,” Hummel said about his heavy shot.

“I didn’t really think I had a hard shot ‘Wils’ (SJSH head coach John Wilson) always tells me that I do but I didn’t really think so.”

In the fastest skater competition Andre Landry left everyone in the snow dust with an impressive time of 11.75 seconds skating one lap around Memorial Gardens ice.

“I was surprised we got a running start at it,” said Landry.

“The only thing I was worried about was the starting so when I saw we had the running start I thought I might have a better shot at it. It was a little nerve wracking you don’t want to fall or anything especially when you’re skating around the rink by yourself so I was just trying to stay on my feet.”

NDA convener John Wilson is glad the event came together this season as a great way to officially end the NDA hockey season for another year.

“They really enjoy it it’s a nice cap off to the season for them they are able to play with some guys that they banged around all year they have some fun now, and you have kids on the bench talking about the year,” said Wilson.

Other awards

In the only other skills competition event the West Ferris Trojans won the goal scoring relay; scoring twice in a time of 23.95 seconds.
Team Scarlet Red’s MVP was Trojan Caleb Fricker while Team Gold’s MVP went to the Raiders Eric Nicholls.

The Team Scarlet Red Goaltender MVP went to the Barons Drew Breton while Team Gold’s Goalie MVP went to Scollard’s Mark Wagner.
