North Bay paddlers Zaffia and Zeyana Laplante competed at Canoe Kayak Canada’s National championships in Ottawa this past weekend and are coming home with some impressive canoeing hardware.

Zeyana competed in the  K1, K2 and war canoe events bringing home silver and bronze medals.

Older sister Zaffia competed in the C2, C4 and war canoe events and brought home gold, silver and bronze.

In the C2 200 meter event Zaffia and partner Katie Vincent set a new National record of 49.198 seconds eclipsing the old record of 55.461.

The Sprint Nationals attracted over 1,200 athletes from across Canada and featured Olympic medallists such as Adam van Koeverden and World champions Mark deJonge and Lawrence Vincent Lapointe.

This marks the close of the 2015 competitive season and a return to school for many of the paddlers.

Locally the North Bay Canoe Club will be starting fall training in September.
