BayToday.ca has learned that Trappers head coach Beau Moyer has handed in his resignation to outgoing team president Larry Keenan Tuesday afternoon.

“I can’t make a commitment to be around in September with what’s going on with my personal life,” noting that he may be looking to move to Southern Ontario in the late summer.

Moyer took over the head coaching position from Robin Boucher halfway through the 2007-2008 season.

In 2008-2009, Moyer guided the Trappers to a 10-23-1 record and 7th spot in Great North Midget League standings.

The Trappers were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs on Saturday at Memorial Gardens as the Sudbury Nickel Capital Wolves swept the Trappers in 3 straight.

Trapper Reflection

He enjoyed his year and a half behind the Trappers bench and will likely pursue other coaching opportunities in the future and has already had offers from Jr. hockey teams in Ontario.

But it wasn't an easy season for Moyer.

Along with a sub .500 record, the former Trapper had a lot of off-ice issues to deal with including a handful of players leaving the team to join the high school ranks before Christmas.

“I feel kind of mixed feelings - I feel that I’m letting some of my players down," he admitted.

"I never promised I’d be around to the players but the ones that we saw eye to eye I think I disappointed some of them.

"A lot of people say how bad it was, but you are put in a position when 85% of the people want to see you fail - I didn’t think it would happen to this extent - but I've always believed in myself and I’m ready for any challenge in the future.”

Perry Olivier is one of the people that supported Moyer. He was very impressed that Moyer allowed his son Jamie Olivier to return to the club this after leaving the team last season for High School Hockey.

"I thanked him for giving Jamie another chance and Jamie enjoyed going to the rink every day," said Olivier, who is also an OHL scout with the Erie Otters.

"It opened a lot of doors by giving Jamie a second chance and as a parent I’m very pleased with how it worked out."

Keenan Reaction

Outgoing president Larry Keenan who will officially hand over the Trappers keys to incoming president Scott Kile, believes Moyer did an excellent job in his time with the Midget AAA organization.

“Beau was alone and did a good job and handled adverse conditions very well and the attitude of some of the parents," said Keenan noting that Moyer's assistant coaches had schedules that made it challenging for them to be at every practice.

"All in all he handled it well - despite all this - that is not why he resigned.”

"I think Beau will remain in the coaching fraternity wherever he is. I think Beau would make an excellent head coach again and make an excellent assistant coach in Jr. Hockey."
