Mother St. Bride captured the 18th Tomahawk Raider Classic Elementary Basketball Tournament Saturday night with a 21-14 victory over Cite des Jeunes at the Raider Dome in the boys final.
Mother St. Bride captured the 18th Tomahawk Raider Classic Elementary Basketball Tournament Saturday night with a 21-14 victory over Cite des Jeunes at the Raider Dome in the boys final. Tournament MVP Sheldon Desilets poured in 15 points for the Eagles who won four straight games on route to the championship. Mother St. Bride led 11-8 at half time and Cite was unable to close the gap in the second half as the Eagles used a tough zone to keep Cite at bay. Twenty eight teams took place in the tournament hosted by the Chippewa Raider basketball program. Jeremy Poeta and Troy Chayer joined Desilets on the All Star team along with Seb maille and Alex Cadotte from Cite. Kris Faucon of W.J. Fricker, Sam Barber of Silver Birches, Adam Haines Thorah, Colin McLean Land of Lakes, and Steve Paquette of Centennial round out the tournament all stars.

Elliot Lake win the girls crown

Central Avenue Public of Elliot Lake won the 18th Tomahawk girls crown on Saturday at Chippewa Secondary. Led by Shannon Snow’s 14 points the Cougars beat SA Cawker of Port Perry 30-25. The Cougars led 19-14 at half time and kept the Port Perry team from making any runs toward a comeback with tenacious defense. Sherri McLean from Elliot Lake was the tournament MVP while Snow made the all star team. Joining Snow was Brooke Luchka and Jenna Owen of SA Cawker, Jenna Davidson of W.J. Fricker, Jennifer Leckie Silver Birches, Krista Nelson Land of lakes, Stephanie Bigras Jeunesse Active, Emilie Goulet Cite des Jeunes, Georgie Meridith Riverside, Rose Mitchell McCaskill Mills, and Gabby Elliot of Thorah. A total of 16 teams competed in the girls divisions from all around the province. The Tomahawk is one of the largest elementary tournaments held in Ontario.
