Marymount claims Lakers Classic

The Marymount Regals from Sudbury ended a nine year drought by claiming the 15th annual Lakers Volleyball Classic Sr. Girls Tournament Saturday with a tough 2-1 come from behind victory over North Bay’s Scollard Hall Bears.

In the final the Bears came out flying taking a 12-6 lead on the strength of some solid defense and the offense of Lucia Demarco who was named the player of the game for the Bears. The Bears would continue their strong play as Marymount struggled to find any offensive rhythm and closed out the first set 25-19.

The second set was point for point until Marymount scored a six point run as Shawna Metcalf took over the game. To the Bears credit they remained in the game and chipped away at the lead. The game took a turn when Marymount was called out of rotation and Scollard managed a four point run to take the 19-18 lead and the momentum. The adversity seemed to ignite the Regals as the put together some solid defense and Metcalf did the rest on offense forcing a third and deciding set with a 25-23 victory.

The final set proved to be much of the same as the Regals jumped out to an early 6-3 lead however the Bears clawed their way to six points at the turn. The games turning point came when Marymount made a four point run to lead 12 – 6 late in the match. The Bears Demarco scored a flurry of points late in the match however Marymount’s lead proved too big to overcome as the Regals closed out the match with a 15-12 victory. Metcalf was named the player of the game for the Regals.

Marymount dominated pool play going a perfect 10-0 and rolled through the quarter-finals with a 2-0 victory over Orillia. The semi-finals pitted two Sudbury rivals and the match did not disappoint. Marymount edged Confederation 25-23, 25-23 in a match that featured terrific offensive performance from Shawna Metcalf, Kristen Bolduc and Trina Czerkas.

Scollard arrived to the finals by also going perfect in pool play and disposing of the defending champions Sir James Dunn Eagles in quarter-final play. The Bears continued to roll as they defeated Eastview from Barrie 2-0 in the semi-finals.
